I ride a Suzuki DR650 Dualsport motorcycle. I occasionally sail Catalina Capri 22, Columbia 29, and Ranger 26 (the old racing version) sailboats. When I use computers, I prefer RedHat or Fedora based Operating Systems.

I scanned some documents from my father's flight squadron VBF-1, aboard the USS Bennington in WW-2.
Also here is his biography :
My attempt at deploying some simple java applications using JNLP.
I thought it would be fun to get Sun's JDK development environment, the JSR-231 (JOGL) and the NeHe examples, lessons and tutorials working on Fedora 11. Check it out!
Fedora 11 Java JOGL and NeHe OpenGL Examples
I thought it would be fun to do a couple of javascript tutorials. I found them on the web navigating through Linux Weekly News, which had a discussion on chunkfs. I've been having a few issues with fsck speed. This included a presentation by Valerie Aurora, a filesystem and math expert. Finally I ended up at Akkana Peck's Javascript Examples. They are intros written for teens and/or newbs so hopefully I can manage. Hopefully "I'm doing this right".
I stayed up late last night to watch the earliest news on Iran. However the main news sites were silent. The only live info came from places like CNN's Ireports and YouTube. When the European and Western news finally started saying something it was really watered down. "Water Cannons", "Tear Gas", "Batons", etc. I have some screen caps of what the real world world looked like on 6/20/2009, and the pablum spoon fed to us by the western media.
Here are some notes I made while testing Catalyst 8.9. It still doesn't work with my Fedora 9 x86_64 box and a AGP x800 card.
Here are some quick pics and a movie I shot along the Kern River, just North of Lake Isabella, CA.

I tried (and failed) to walk to Mule Peak Lookout. Just me being dumb--no map (they were out) and no GPS, so I didn't want to take too many turns. Lots a pics and a couple of videos.
Here are some pics and movies I shopt along the Trail of 100 Giants in California's Sequioa National Forest.

I met Nathan Pritikin when I was a kid in the late 1970's. He was opening a restaurant on the top floor of the high-rise hotel I worked at in San Diego. Here is an MP3 of one of his speeches.

Sometime the basics of what to do with a dead box need to be revisited and contemplated. This is such a document.
This is a basic sailing checklist, with some additional information about sailboats. Every boat is different; while this works for me, your needs (and safety) may require a different list. By downloading this list, you agree to never hold me responsible for any errors I have put in the list or any errors you make while fumbling through the list on a dark and stormy night in the middle of the Atlantic.
This is a video link test. Link one goes to a public video on YouTube, Link 2 is the raw MOV file, Link 3 is a MP4/H.264 compressed file, Link 4 is a MP4/mpeg-4/basic compressed file, Link 5 is a MP4/mpeg-4/improved file (all done on my Mac).
Link 6 is a mpeg-1 file made by processing the raw 70+ MB. MOV file on Fedora 8 using the command "ffmeg -i boris_jumping.mov -acodec mp2 -ar 22050 boris_jumping.mpg". I had to enable the livna.org repo and "yum install" the ffmpeg program.
On Fedora 8, I can play the first file (hosted on YouTube, via the flash plugin) and the last file (converted from the raw QuickTime MOV to MPEG-1 using ffmeg). The other formats don't play. I had to yum install the mplayer application (hosted on livna.org) to play the final file. The Mac plays them all.

There are a lot of howto's on the web about using createrepo to setup local RPM respositories. Unfortunately, if you rsync to "Everything", you might not get the group metadata. The following explains how to use createrepo and the Fedora-8-comps.xml to enable the group syntax in anaconda kickstart files.

I found an rpm file on the web that does not appear to be used by RedHat or Fedora anymore. After some changes I found it useful. Since it's GPL'd by RedHat (Copyright Tammy Fox) I am posting the changed RPM files here. Here are both RPMs (src and noarch). The name has been changed a little to prevent clashing. They were built up on FC5 and I've used both on FC4 and FC5 with no known issues. Mostly I just wanted to add default filters to the log definitions and speed up the refresh rate. While I was at it, I removed a number of warnings and deprecation issues. I didn't have time to deal with I18N, so I gutted it out. I've never written code in Python/PyGTK before, so things do get ugly in a few places.
